Recap of the 2011 Tobacco Days Motorcycle Show

The 2011 Tobacco Days Motorcycle Show is officially a success with over 120 motorcycles attending.

The day started out early in the morning with some rain, but by eight o’clock things started drying up and the sky turned blue for us. Then it got warm and warm turned to HOT! That’s alright because there were plenty of businesses that opened their doors with cold air conditioning and the grass in front of the Train Depot was shaded by those tall pine trees.

We’d like to thank each and every one of you who decided to share their passion of motorcycles with our spectators and each other on Saturday. The variety of motorcycles was again incredible.

We were lucky enough to have found Ben Schumann and his wife Daria of Schumann Studio ( http://www.schumannstudio.com/ ) near Milwaukee to professionally photograph the entire motorcycle show this year. If you would like an image of your motorcycle or of any of the motorcycles at the show, we will provide you with contact information. Schumann Studio is offering 8 X 10’s professionally printed for $15 each. Schumann Studio is donating $6 for every 8 X 10 and other sized printed images from the show to the Tobacco Day’s Motorcycle Show. Purchasing an image of the show only benefits the local charities so look for contact information soon on this website.

Since the show has grown in size we are in need of more volunteers. We need people the day of the show to help direct motorcycles to park, help sell raffle tickets and sell t-shirts. We also need more dedicated people who can attend monthly meetings throughout the year to help plan next years show as well as knowledgeable people to judge motorcycles as well. If you are interested or know someone who may be interested, please contact me at tobaccodaysmotorcycles@yahoo.com to discuss. Without our volunteers this show cannot happen each and every year.

So……..the big question is “WHO WON?” Since we started using a new judging system this year, it took us a little longer than last year to tally up each motorcycle’s score. The new judging score sheets were on display at the Registration Table as well as the Judging Handbook that details what we look for in a motorcycle while judging. So, we are sorry for the long wait for the trophy presentation, but we got it done and it was done accurately. We will be adding 2^nd and 3^rd place trophies for all classes next year as well as announcing the winners and giving awards to the Youth Class! The kids that showed up had some incredible machines and we appreciate them very much!!

A Few Questions Answered.......and WE ARE READY FOR SATURDAY!!!!!

Received a few inquires and questions about the show over the last few days. I’d like to address them here, publicly.

Q. “Do you have a swap meet? I’ve got a bike I’d like to sell”

A. Sorry, but we do not have a swap meet……this year. Although I’ve encouraged people to enter the bike(s) they want to sell into the bike show and put a “FOR SALE” sign on it with contact info. It will cost you $10, but all in all if you sell it, that’s a heck of a deal! Plus with that $10 you get free entrance into Racetrack Park for all the live entertainment, refreshments and food for the day/night!

Q. “How much for spectators to come down?”

A. FREE!!! That’s right….totally free of charge and it’s safe for kids. We just ask that you make sure your kids are beside you at all times as it’s easy for a youngster to get tangled up in a motorcycle.

Q. “Can I enter my new or newer motorcycle?”

A. Absolutely. We have 30 different classes and several that accommodate new or newer motorcycles of all brands/types. This show isn’t just about displaying old/vintage models, it’s also a great way for people to see what’s going on with new/newer motorcycles.

Q.“My bike isn’t a show bike so I probably won’t enter it.” -OR- “I don’t like showing my motorcycle because I don’t care about winning a trophy”

A.Sure we do judge and we do award a trophy per class, but this show is much more than that. This is a way for spectators and show participants to see the greatest variety of motorcycles from all years and from all over the world in one spot. So if your bike has some rust on it or it’s a daily rider, BRING IT DOWN! You have no idea how many people get inspired by seeing a type/brand/model of motorcycle they’ve never seen before. Not to mention some of us old guys like to see the motorcycles of our youth!

Q. “What time does the show start?”

A. The gates open up for registration at 6:30 a.m. and registration closes at 10:30 a.m. with judging starting at 11:30 a.m.

Q. “Is there a place to unload my bike from a trailer?”

A. Of course. You can pull into the Train Depot parking lot near the show, unload and then park on the south side of the Edgerton Community Outreach building. Once unloaded there is an opening in the fence your bike(s) can be safely rolled through and into the show. We do ask that if you are unloading at the Train Depot, do so in a timely matter as others will need to unload as well. Also, please do not start your bike and ride it through the opening in the fence……safety first.

Hopefully this clears up some questions we have encountered over the last few months.

T-shirts and trophies are all ready picked up and we have a great layout for the parking lot! All we need is YOU and a few hundred motorcycles…….so common down to Edgerton on Saturday!!

Final Stretch......The Show Is Here This Saturday!

Here we are on the home stretch to the 2011 Tobacco Days Motorcycle Show!

Remember the show is this Saturday, July 16th in downtown Edgerton where highway 59 & highway 51 meet. You cannot miss the location….very easy to find.

Everything is in place for a great year and from all the pre-registrations, a lot of variety again. There are Triumphs, Hondas, Harley Davidson’s, Yamaha’s, Moto Guzzi’s, Suzuki’s, Maico’s, Husky’s, CZ’s and Bridgestone’s all represented so far.

Event t-shirts are all ready to go and our custom trophies are being picked up on Wednesday!

We will have plenty of cold ice water for everyone to stay cool and plenty of shade as well. All the local businesses downtown will be open and willing to share their air conditioning, fresh food and refreshments with you.

Raffle prizes have really stepped up this year with a great assortment of items (motorcycle tires, riding jackets, gloves, ton’s of cool t-shirts, Throttle Threads work shirts and plenty of gift certificates for all your favorite watering holes).

We welcome bikes transported on trailers as well. We have plenty of parking for trucks and trailers!!

Judges are meeting tonight for a meeting to go over specifics. We have created judging sheets this year as well as a handbook that anyone can look at to better understand our new judging criteria. All of which will be on display at registration at the show.

Remember, after the show we will all be riding out to Racetrack Park on the west side of Edgerton to enjoy live music, food and beverages through midnight. All registered participants in the motorcycle show receive free admission into Racetrack for Saturday as well!

Can’t wait to see everyone and all those great bikes pulling in on Saturday morning. Gates and registration opens at 6:30 a.m.!

We have a special surprise for everyone this year. Ben Schumann from Schumann Studio will be onsite for the entire length of the event taking high quality and professional pictures…..stop by and see Ben to purchase an image of your bike at the show! Ben specializes in taking images of motorcycles and motorcycle racing! We are very excited to have him this year.

Ryan S- Worlds Fastest Wheelie On Ice!!!

Just a sneak preview of who will be at the 2011 Tobacco Day’s Motorcycle Show in just under two weeks.

We have Ryan S of the Vertical Mischief Motorcycle Stunt Crew, holder of the world record for fastest ice wheelie. Just this year Ryan went over 95 MPH on one wheel on Lake Koshkonong aboard his Kawasaki sport bike. Ryan performs his stunt shows all over the world and we are very happy to have him coming down with one of his highly modified stunt bikes. He will be signing autographs and will be more than happy to speak with anyone with questions.

Ryan S faced adversity in October of 2007 when while returning home from his day job at the Department of Natural Resources, he rounded a blind corner only to find a van in his lane. His head went through the windshield of the van and he suffered several skull fractures and bleeding of the brain. He also lost his left leg from the knee down. Ryan spent many months in the hospital recovering from trauma head to toe even though he was wearing a helmet and full protective gear. In under a year since his accident in 2008, Ryan was back on his stunt bike with a prosthetic leg from Prosthetic Laboratories in Madison Wisconsin. He has since come back with a vengeance performing all over the world!

Just a reminder that there are only 18 days left until the 2011 Tobacco Days Motorcycle Show (Saturday July 16^th)!

We have collected some great raffle prizes as well as selling raffle tickets for the V-8 gas grill……that’s right a V-8 gas grill complete with headers, air cleaner, spark plug wires and distributor! We will be selling tickets the day of the show for the grill as it will be on display as well.

Just a reminder as well, this years Motorcycle Show is located right downtown in our own huge parking lot. We have some unique and great looking ways of dressing a parking lot out so NOBODY can miss it!

We’ve all been riding down a little country road, going through towns that if you blink or sneeze you’ve missed the entire downtown. A Marines Vigil & Vet's Roll- Giving To Those Who Need Us

It's a powerful demonstration of mutual courage and respect for sacrifices that have been made by many generations. The Rolling Thunder Ride has had a very unique and great way of bringing awareness forward for the great men and woman who serve in our military.

One of the many great charities we raise money for is Vets Roll. This great organization based out of Southern Wisconsin/Northern Illinois provides transportation, lodging, food and specialized care for our aging WWII and Korean War Veterans. Those Veterans are transported with great care and respect to see their memorials in Washington DC.

Barrymore Theater This Saturday- "On Any Sunday" & Crud Run Sunday

Planning on riding up to the Barrymore Theater this Saturday (April 30th) for a viewing of the iconic movie that got a lot of us into riding bikes, "On Any Sunday". Movie starts at 7:00 with tickets $8 in advance and $10 the day of. There will be motorcycle only parking as well!! Can't wait!

Then on Sunday is the now famous spring version of the Slimey Crud Run. If you like old bikes or just motorcycles in general, this is now the place to be in the Spring and Fall in Wisconsin. Get that old bike out of storage and join all of us!

What a great day we had for the first annual Tobacco Days Motorcycle Show! It was a little warm with temperatures peaking out in the 90's, but we had plenty of free ice cold water thanks to our local Kwik Trip.

We would personally like to thank everyone that entered a bike in the show, those that attended and a special thanks to the Tobacco Days Car & Truck Show for giving us a chance. The Bob Huber Long Distance Rider award went to Mr Jim McGee that rode his 2002 Heritage Softail all the way from Austin Minnesota, right around 300 miles. We feel honored that not only did Jim ride all that distance for our show, but also knew Bob Huber.

Finally the Bill Collins Best of Show award went to a gentleman that rode his beautiful 1946 Indian Chief Roadmaster from Monroe Wisconsin, Mr Larry Van Horn. Larry came riding in complete with leather helmet and goggles. He needed no help in kicking that old Chief over either! Thank you Larry for sharing your special bike with us and we hope to see you back again in 2011.

We had a total of 48 registered motorcycles and 10 registered youth machines, not bad for the first year. All the bikes were well done and it was a shame that they all couldn't win an award. Between the Honda 250 Rebel chop, all the great looking BSA & Triumph's, vintage Maico, CZ & Yamaha YZ dirt bikes, the purpose built CR500 hill climber, three Moto Guzzi's, Japanese sport bikes & cruisers, Harley Davidson Shovelheads, Evo's and even a few Twin Cam's, Ural hack rig that showed up.......there were no complaints in diversity of motorcycles. To see all of these right here in downtown Edgerton Wisconsin was amazing to say the least.

Dick Werner was so kind to bring down a museum quality informational and pictorial display of pre-1915 motorcycles made right here in Wisconsin. Thanks again Dick and hope to see you back in 2011......there will always be room for you!

We had many compliments on the t-shirts that Chris Horvath from Pro Image Graphix designed for us. They must have been good, they were sold out the day of the event!! Much appreciated Chris!

Thanks to Tyson Trunkhill from True Engineering in Edgerton for donating custom made kickstand plates keeping all those bikes downtown from sinking into the asphalt on that hot day. Their kickstand plates were used all weekend out at Racetrack Park as well!

Jason and Matt from American Cafe deserve a huge thanks as well! It was great to have them giving two free screenings of their film during the show. We would like to thank the Masonic Temple in Edgerton for giving American Cafe the perfect room for the free screening!!

Shirt Design DONE!

Sat down with Chris Horvath at Pro Image Graphix Friday night. We came up with a t-shirt design that will surely be a hit. The design will be unveiled at the show on July 17th. It incorporates antique motorcycles with paying homage to Tobacco Days. We are trying to decide on how many shirts to get made up, either 100 or 200. They will be very reasonably priced with all profits going to the charity work that the Car, Truck and Motorcycle show is known for.

Pro Image Graphix is known for their original design and logo work. They have the ability to do large jobs or small. They only use the very best materials as well. Pricing is very fair and honest.

Motorcycle & Car Cruise Night- Hooters Janesville Wisconsin

Quaker Steak & Lube TONIGHT!!

What a great week so far. The temperature will strike eighty this week and not a cloud in the sky. The wind has even decided to take a break from time to time.

Anyways, look for us tonight up at Quaker Steak & Lube's Wednesday Bike Night. We'll be handing flyers out for the Tobacco Days Motorcycle Show that’s happening on July 17^th.

If anyone wants to ride with, we are meeting on the north side of Janesville at 5:15 and leaving shortly after. Send me over an email if you want to ride along.

Team Triumph Open House

Tomorrow (Saturday May 15th) I'll be heading over to Team Triumph ( http://www.triumph1.com/intro.htm ) for their annual Open House. They have demo rides, food, beverages and a lot of neat bikes on display. Not to mention all the riders that show up!

Some of them aren't safe for children and are have "Some Graphic Images" after the name. They are very far from being pornographic though.

"American Cafe" - The Movie Free Screening!

We are working with the good folks over at the Second Society on finalizing times and a venue to provide a free screening of their new movie documenting Cafe Racer Culture in the United States.

The movie "American Cafe" premiered in Madison at the Sundance Saturday May 1st to a sold out crowd. Spoke with several attendees of the the movie yesterday during the Slimey Crud Run and heard nothing but great things.

"American Cafe" has also become the official sponsor of the "Cafe Racer" class for this years event. Bring out your cafe bike old and new!

Sharer’s Cycle

On Saturday I'll be riding my black 1974 Moto Guzzi 850T up to Sharer’s Cycle Open House outside of Verona. Sharer's is one of the oldest Triumph dealers in the country. Lot’s of history and a great location to ride too. It’s a great event, with a combination of old timers and “new” timers. Lyall has done and seen a lot happen in the last four decades.

Slimey Crud Run

On Sunday (May 2^nd) the black 850T and I will once again be riding the Spring Slimey Crud Run. This is a great event that brings several different types of motorcyclists together for a scenic ride through the beginning of the rolling hills of western Wisconsin. The weather looks as though it’s going to cooperate so there will be a great turnout.

I’ll be there handing out flyers to those that would like one for the show. Don't worry, I'm not the guy who stuffs fliers on peoples bikes......that's too rude.

If you would like to see a Vincent or maybe a 1927 JD Harley riding down the road as they were meant to, come out and check out the Slimey Crud Run this Sunday.

Don't forget when you're in Leland to get a summer sausage sandwich......it's just like what mom packed in your lunchbox as a kid.

This class was created to get the next generation involved. Any child 15 and under in age is invited to bring their dirtbike, atv or go cart down. Youth class entrance fee will be two or more non-perishable food donations to the local food bank. These donations can be brought the day of the event. There will be a drop off location. Non-perishable food donations are welcomed from anyone!)

Special Awards
There will be two special awards given out.

The first is the Bill "Spoons" Collins Best of Show Award. Bill Collins was a dear friend to many in the motorcycle community and industry. His never ending work in charities, supporting young people and his community will never be forgotten. This award will be selected by show participants only. One vote per participate.

The second award is the Bob Huber Distance Award. Bob Huber was a well respected motorcycle mechanic, tuner and rider. His never ending desire for motorcycles and his well known reputation for riding more miles than most is remembered with this award. The rider that rode the longest distance to the show receives this award. Make sure to fill out "Miles to Show" on the registration form.

Sidecars/Hacks are welcomed in all classes.

Edgerton is just a half an hour south of Madison and a little over an hour southwest of Milwaukee.

We are hoping for a great turnout.

I'll be posting more information as the days go on as well as explanations of classes, events, sponsors and what charities benefit from this show. Something a lot of people don't realize.......this is all non-profit.

A few more fine tweaks on the show flier and we will start mailing them out and dropping them off. It's taken some creativity for us to add so much information on a 8" X 10" piece of paper and still keep it readable with the bare eye. If you would like a stack or even just one, let me know and I will get them out to you ASAP.

THE HISTORY OF IT ALL
A few years ago some friends and I rode our bikes up to our towns annual car show in hopes of starting a motorcycle class for the following year. We were told that we would have to enter in the car shows "special interest" class. So, we tossed our entrance fee down, then participated, sat there all day and none of us won anything. Bummer right? Not really.......it was motivation.

Of course we thought we were ignored, but turns out we weren't. One of the car show guys explained to me that they being "car" people, knew nothing about how to fairly judge motorcycles. Makes sense. So the journey began. I offered up my services to be in charge of organizing the event and attend all necessary meetings. Last week after much discussion, the car show guys voted me in to be in charge of the first annual Edgerton Tobacco Days Motorcycle Show in conjunction with their car show.

We hope to use this blog to keep everyone up to date on details as the date progresses. There are a lot of exciting things happening and a lot of people that are involved at this point already.
